Heavy Rescue

Middlebury Regional EMS operates one of only two ambulance-based Heavy Rescue services in the state of Vermont. Heavy Rescue provides a specialized vehicle, equipment, and trained personnel, in order to free entrapped patients. Most often, these operations involve specialized equipment, such as hydraulic tools and air bags, used for stabilization and lifting.

We supplement local, specialized teams - who provide tech rescue - by offering services such as scene lighting, tools and equipment, and extra personnel. We also provide extrication training for some fire departments in our service area, providing the opportunity for smoother, safer, future rescue responses.

From medical assistance and motor vehicle accidents, to mass casualties and helicopter landing zones, the Heavy Rescue service responds to around 70 calls per year.

Technicians on the Heavy Rescue team have a wide range of education and knowledge, from mechanical to firefighting backgrounds.

Most training is done "in-house," and anyone wishing to join the Heavy Rescue team can contact either Captain Kirk Gallipo (kirk.gallipo@gmail.com), or Lieutenant Donnie Sweet (middtech31@gmail.com). We're always looking for volunteers. Experience is not required.
